The Global Game Jam (GGJ) is a 48 hour game development competition, which will be held simultaneously at a number of locations around the world. The South African leg of the event will be staged at the Computer Science Dept of the University of Cape Town.

Additional information on the event can be found here. A nominal fee (R50) will be charged per entrant to cover basic access costs. About 30 Windows workstations will be available for participating teams to use. Details of development API's and restrictions can be found in the FAQ.  Users will be assigned an account on the system and will have internet access.

There will be a unifying theme to the GGJ and a location specific constraint which will differ for each hosting site. These will only be made known on the morning that the event begins. Participants will sign-up beforehand and may bring their own laptops to the venue. There is, however, a limit to free network points so only one laptop per group will be allowed on the network and assigned an IP address.

In keeping with other events of this nature, the GGJ encourages networking and team-work by preceding the event with a "game pitch". After the theme is announced, participants are allowed time to chat amongst themselves and to discuss various ideas around the theme. Then, anyone (or a newly formed group) who feels confident enough can "pitch" a proposal for a game to all the participants and those who can contribute something to the effort are free to join that group. This continues until all those wishing to pitch have done so or joined another group. Everyone who attends must end up in some group, however, since everyone can contribute to the success of a group - even if they assume a role such as testing.

Answers to common questions can be found in the FAQ.

To participate, you must first create a profile on the International Jam Website: http://www.globalgamejam.org/ making sure to join the Cape Town Jam (which can be found under the list of venues). Then, please click here to send an email to the local organizers, stating

  • your Full Name
  • your ID number (or passport number) - used to create unique a/c ID on the CS domain
  • your dietary requirements if any (Halaal, Kosher or vegetarian)

NOTE: due to legal concerns raised by the organizers, the Game Jam will not be open to minors.

The following is a tentative programme for 29th January:

  • 4:40 - 5:00PM: Registration
Registration for the event will take place in LT303 of the Computer Science building (18 University Avenue, Upper Campus - see maps link below).

  • 5:00 - 5.30PM: Welcome and Announcements

Welcome and recorded keynote from GGJ HQ (if available). The Theme will also be revealed at this point. Instructions will be given to participants on procedures for team building, project submissions etc.

  • 5:30 - 6:15PM: Group Formation and The Pitch

Participants will have time to socialise and chat among themselves. Proto-teams may form at this point, with a basic idea they wish to pitch. Those wishing to pitch may do so to the rest of the attendees. Interested parties may then join those groups or make pitches of their own. This process will continue until everyone is part of a group.
  • 6:15PM: Participants shown to Labs

Participants can then set up their own machines, log on to the lab system or head off for a huddle/brain storming session. There will be food, coffee, tea etc to lubricate the mental process. At this point the Jam will have commenced!

Note: submissions will be handed using electronic submission. The process will be explained on Day 1. The submission deadline is 3.00PM on Sunday 31st of January. This will be followed by game demos and judging.

The Department of Computer Science is located on Upper Campus - please refer to UCT's map/directions page for more accurate information. Parking will be available in Parking Area P6 (refer to the Upper Campus map) just before the access boom.
